A Word of Inspiration
"Everyone can be great because anyone can serve."
-- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dear FACAA,

Joyce's New HeadshotHelp Was on the Way...

 Now, Help is Here!
Isn't it funny how time flies?  The month of January swept in so swiftly that it left as quickly as it came! Yet, the needs of the American people remain at an all-time high.  We are pleased to offer assistance to families that are in need of help with mortgage and rental assistance as they do all they can to prevent the loss of their home or evitction.  The assistance we are receiving from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA, also known as The Stimulus) expands our capacity to provide such services.
As such, we encourage you to visit our website at www.facaa.org to review the eligibility guidelines.  Please don't automatically assume that you don't qualify.  We are realizing that there are many middle-class families who are now in need, and our response is, "Do not be ashamed to ask for help if help is what you need."  If you don't need the help yourself, please spread the word to someone else.  Many organizations are having to return millions upon millions of dollars because they were not able to disburse the funds in their communities.  Surely, this will not be FACAA's testimony.
This edition of The FACAA Impact will provide you with insight on our many other initiatives.  Our YouthBuild program is still going strong, and we are excited to have partnered with the Atlanta Women's Shelter during the Christmas holidays.  Also, our conversation on structural racism continues, and we look forward to playing a major role the 2010 Southeastern Colloquium on February 17-19
If there are ways in which we can be of better service, by all means, please let us know.  In the meantime, we hope you enjoy this edition of our communique.  Enjoy!
Sincerely,
Dr. Joyce J. Dorsey
President and CEO

Fighting Racism and Poverty:
FACAA Plays Key Role in 2010 Southeastern Colloquium
FACAA is pleased to play a key role as the Georgia Community Action Association (GCAA) presents the 2010 Southeastern Colloquium.  Held to address racial inequality and poverty, the theme for the event is "Re-engaging Communities in the Struggle to Reduce Poverty and Increase Economic Security."
The colloquium will be held February 17-19 at the Atlanta Airport Hilton, and will feature education and empowerment sessions on Opportunity Based Housing, The Psychological Impacts of Racism, Miscounting and Discounting Race, Poverty, Prisoners and US Census, Eliminating Racial Barriers Through Diversity, among others.
The event is co-chaired by Dr. Dorsey and Dr. William "Sonny" Walker of the William Sonny Walker Group.  Walker and Dorsey are both long-time advocates of addressing the struggles associated with structural racism and poverty.  "This event will present a number of issues that are rarely discussed as the evils of structural racism continue to play a dominant role in the fiber of America's moral fabric," states Dr. Dorsey.
Guest speakers include Dr. Glora Morrow (psychologist), Malcolm Ratchford (PCA Headstart), K.V. Kumar (US India Trade), Lynn Huntley (SEF), Pastor Timothy McDonald, Lakata Mjumbe (CAA of Alabama),  Irene Woo (Solid), Wan Smith (I am Royalty) and Dr. Frederick Zak (Restoring Communities).  The keynote speaker will be Dr. John Powell of the Kirwan Institute.
"The problem of structural racism is something that can no longer remain in obscurity," states co-chair Walker.  Lorraine Daniels, GCAA's executive director adds, "Whether you work in human resources, community action, government, healthcare, or a pastor, entrepreneur, elected official, college student or social worker, this is one series of conversations you cannot afford to miss."
For more details, visit www.georgiacaa.org.  Also, if you are interested in attendance but are in need of assistance with the registration, contact the FACAA offices for possible scholarships.
YouthBuild Participants Complete Community Service Project

Participants in FACAA's YouthBuild program had the opportunity to complete a community service project on King Day (January 18, 2010), a day that is slated to be "a day on and not a day off."  The project took place at the Lee-Stelzer Museum.  Pictured are: DeShawn Jackson, Danny Lawson, Fred Miller and Anthony Barnes.  Also pictured is the entire group of participants.  YouthBuild is a program that affords youth and young adults the opportunity to earn their GED while simultaneously gaining job training and leadership development.

FACAA Makes the Holidays Brighter
Thanks to the generosity of students in FACAA's computer class and the kind hearts of a couple of "behind the scenes" staff, Christmas was made a lot brighter for those at the Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children, located at 655 Ethel Street.  According to Dianne Pope, FACAA's computer instructor, the entire initiative began with one of the students asking if anyone had any extra shoe boxes.  She had placed it in her heart to  make a donation to the shelter.  The idea caught fire and was made into a class project.  When two staff members saw what was taking place, they offered monetary donations as well as brought in clothing.  This was truly a blessing to those who received, just as it was to those who gave.

  • 3 cups bread flour
  • 1 (.25 ounce) envelope active dry yeast
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water
  • 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, divided
  • 3 tablespoons chopped fresh rosemary
  • 1 (14 ounce) can pizza sauce
  • 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

  • 15 slices vegetarian pepperoni
  • 1 (2.25 ounce) can sliced black olives

  3. Divide the dough into three portions. Shape each piece into a heart shape about 1/2 inch thick. Brush with remaining olive oil, and spread a thin layer of pizza sauce on each pizza. Sprinkle cheese over pizza sauce, and arrange tomatoes, zucchini, pepperoni, and sliced olives on top.
  4. Bake for about 15 to 20 minutes, or until cheese has melted and crust is browned.
Tip:
